Be a Champion for Self-Advocacy

Section Three: Self-Advocacy Guide for Adolescent Patients

What is Self-Advocacy?

Self-advocacy refers to a person’s understanding of themselves, their rights, and their needs, as well as their ability to communicate that understanding to others. Self-advocacy skills include the ability and willingness to communicate one’s needs and preferences, identify and navigate resources, demonstrate assertiveness, and maintain self-awareness.

Challenges of Adolescent Self-Advocacy

As a parent, I think it is important to always try to speak and treat children as close to their chronological age despite their mental age. It is so frustrating when people “talk down” or use baby talk with older children.

Even if their interests are much younger, always speak to them with respect. And never assume nonverbal means that they are not able to understand or comprehend their surroundings and those around them.”
