Music Toolkit – “When You’re Happy and You Know It”

What You Need:

  • Hand-held instruments, if available or desired.

Directions:

  • Introduce and review song “When You’re Happy and You Know It” using familiar prompts such as clap your hands:

When you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands

When you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands

When you’re happy and you know it, your face will surely show it

When you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands

  • Prompt child to choose new actions, with or without models.

  • Reinforce chosen action (movement based or instrument based) through changing words of song to match action. For example: “When you’re happy and you know it, play the guitar” or “When you’re happy and you know it, spin in circles”.

This project provides an opportunity for control and choice in identifying and determining movements and actions through a familiar song It is a good activity for ages 2 - 7 years.

All activities should be supervised by an adult.

Thank you to Jessica Sturgeon, MT-BC, HPMT for providing this activity.

Possible modifications:

  • Provide 2-3 choices between movements or playing instruments.

  • Create visual representations or large words to assist in making choices or deciding on movements.

  • If physical limitations don’t allow for the child to complete many actions, utilize other actions they are able to do such as taking deep breaths or altering gaze.
