The Lightning Bug App can be used on any mobile device, tablet, or computer. The app should be used on mobile devices and tablets while the web app can be used on computers. We recommend using the web app on Chrome.
The Lightning Bug App is free. It is a resource provided by the Pediatric Palliative Care Collation, a non-profit whose mission is to support and empower caregivers free of charge.
The Lightning Bug App is designed to streamline the experience of caregivers of children with medically complex diagnoses who are currently undergoing or considering pediatric palliative care. It is meant for families and their palliative care teams. However, it can also be used by anyone over the age of 18 to manage medical information for themselves and their families.

The app is tailored for patients with a variety of necessities and needs. All features are very customizable which gives the user the ability to input unique and specific information ranging from various medication types and dosages to different treatment processes.

You can input all necessary information through any accessible platform, but we recommend initially putting information in through a computer on Chrome. You can then continue to modify information as needed through either the mobile app or web app.
You can share the login information for the patient with anyone from your circle of care. Anybody with the correct login will have access to edit and modify the same information. You can also include the information of people from your circle of care as emergency contacts in the patient’s account.
If you forget your password, you should click the “Forgot password” option below the login button and enter the email address associated with your account to receive a link to set a new password.
You can print information by going to the Download Care Information tab in the app and selecting the information you want to print. You can customize the information being printed based on your needs. Once you select the relevant fields, click the “Download” button which will lead to the creation of a pdf. This pdf can be printed or shared virtually via email, text, or any other compatible applications.
An account can only be used for one child since you can only add information for one child. We recommend creating an account for each child if you are caring for multiple children, so you can have easy access to their information and avoid any confusion.
The dosage field will populate once you specify what type of medication. For example, if the medication is liquid, the volume will appear for you to enter. If it is a pill or tablet, the number of pills/tablets will appear.
To view a new surgeon or doctor, you must input the information in the “Primary Doctor” or “Specialists” tab first. Then you will see his or her name appear in the dropdown menu.
